What's in a Name - How We Got Ours
Names are a weird thing. I'm not sure if it's just proper nouns or grammar in general. I suppose if you think about the phonetics of nearly every word you will likely end up tilting your head in bewilderment. I find it especially difficult to arise creativity when pondering new identities, and naming this company was no different. In similar fashion, it's always interesting to hear about how companies have come up with their name. The stories of how Google accidentally came out of a misspelling of the large number "Googol", or how Twitter was almost "Status" are especially fun to read. And so without further ado, here's our story:
It started as most of these things do with a conversation about what type of name we wanted. Do we want something catchy? What about self-explanatory? Should somebody know exactly what we do simply by hearing our name? How about we make up a new word like so many of the cool new web companies are doing? This went on, and on, and finally we found ourselves back at the beginning.
Having made no progress, we started from scratch and asked ourselves the following question: What defines us? As we discussed our likes and dislikes, character traits and experiences, it all kept coming back to one thing: our school. We are proud graduates of North Carolina State University. We are the WolfPack.
I suppose we alumnus of NC State are a unique bunch...not to say we have more school spirit than others, but I do tend to sense it from most everybody I talk with who is a graduate of our university. You may not know it but Zach Galifianakis, now famous actor and star of "The Hangover" trilogy, is a fan and also former student of NC State. One course shy of graduating, his feelings towards the WolfPack pretty much sum up how we all feel.
